TOASTMASTERS AWARDS DINNER

Toastmasters International operate toastmasters clubs worldwide for members who are looking to improve their communication, public speaking and, most importantly, leadership skills.

Glenwood Form V boys have been awarded membership certificates after completing an eight week course in Toastmasters. During the course the boys were mentored by esteemed Toastmasters Attie Swanepiel and Elaine Swanepoel on how to conduct a professional toastmasters meeting.

Parents and staff were invited to the annual prestigious Toastmasters Awards Dinner on Thursday 29 July 2017 where our boys got the opportunity to showcase speeches, toasts and jokes relating to topics that are important to them. These topics included “The birds and the bees”; “The Glenwood Brotherhood”; “Greek Steel” and many more.

The boys involved were responsible for using their newly acquired leadership skills to organise the whole event and did a splendid job.

Not only were they responsible for preparing and delivering speeches but they had to analyse and give feedback on their peer’s technique and style of speaking,  as well as counting “Uhms” and “Ahs”; reporting on grammar use; and entertaining their guests professionally.

The dinner concluded the course and awards were handed out. Certain boys were selected to represent Glenwood High School at provincial level in the upcoming KZN Toastmasters Competition – we would like to send  our best wishes of luck with these boys as they continue to show the commitment and excellence Toastmasters instils.

After well-executed toastmasters meeting it is evident that Plato was not wrong in saying:

“Fools speak because they have to say something – wise men speak because they have something to say.”

A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Swanepoel, Mrs Barnes and all our Glenwood Toastmasters for showing us on Thursday what it means to be wise men.
