Head Girl 2024. Like in previous years, Schools That Rock interview Head Leaders of High Schools in South Africa. Today we also learn more about Chelsea Henderson, Head Girl 2024 from Curro Hazeldean, Pretoria, Gauteng.
Chelsea, tell us more about yourself and your leadership.
- My name is Chelsea Henderson and I am Head Girl of Curro Hazeldean High School. I have been part of the Hazie family since 2013 when I entered the school as a grade 1 learner. My approach to leadership is centred around fostering a positive and inclusive environment.
What are your personal goals for this year?
- My personal goals for the year are ever changing. There are so many. One that stands out is deciding what career path I choose and where I choose to study for it.
What are your goals for Curro Hazeldean during your term of service?
- In my term of service, as Head Girl 2024 at Curro Hazeldean High School, a goal of mine is to leave a lasting impact, not only on the school itself, but rather the people in my school. My aim is to foster and promote a sense of community among students. Planning new and fun events; such as the ‘Back2School BASH’ held earlier this year. ‘the Starting Sunrise’ with our grade 8 learners, as well as our annual ‘Valentines Ball’; brings people together irrespective of their backgrounds or own interests.
Tell us what were the biggest challenges you experienced as a learner of your school?
- One of the biggest personal challenges I experienced as a learner at Curro Hazeldean High School was learning to find a balance between my academic, sport and culture.
What stands out most to you at your school?
- The culture and morals of my school is what stands out most to me. We truly are a school dedicated to living out our core values, namely love, loyalty and respect. We care for one another, do things as a team, and strive to be one big, happy Curro family.
Who do you look up to for inspiration or mentorship?
- The person I look up to most for both inspiration and mentorship is none other than my mommy, Rosy Henderson. My mom never fails to show me unwavering support.
Chelsea, you’re a kitchen article? What are you and why?
- To be frank, I had to Google what a kitchen article was. According to my research it is just a kitchen appliance. With that being said, if I were to be a kitchen article, I would be a blender because of my versatility. Just like a blender I can adapt to different situations and seamlessly blend various ideas and tasks together.
How would your friends describe you?
- One of the activities at our leader camp was to sit around the bonfire and describe each other. Using what was said then, I believe my friends would tell me that I am a strong, loving and caring person. I tend to put the needs of others before my own. I am an energetic and creative extrovert.
What motivates you to achieve your goals?
- The fear of not living out my full potential is what motivates me to achieve my goals.
Why would you advise learners to also become part of Curro Hazeldean?
- As Head Girl 2024, I would advise learners to become part of my school, Curro Hazeldean, not only because of all it has to offer; academic excellence, a diverse learning environment and numerous extracurricular activities. But also because of the support structure that comes with joining. We truly are one big, happy Hazie family.
Who is your favourite teacher and why?
- I love all the teachers in my school, but if I were to choose the teacher I relate to most, I would choose my English teacher, Mrs Thirion. Mrs Thirion’s passion and love for teaching English shines through in every lesson. Making English fun, engaging and inspiring.
Chelsea, what are your future goals?
- As of right now, a future goal of mine; being young and all; is to discover what my life-long passion and career path will be.
